Celebrate Pride Month With the Libraries' Children's Literature Collection

In celebration of LGBTQIA+ Pride Month in June, check out these resources from the University Libraries Children's Literature Collection. A virtual book display features children's and young adult books in the U of A Libraries collections with links to related teaching guides and discussion questions.

Many of the books featured on the virtual display are past winners of the Mike Morgan & Larry Romans Children's & Young Adult Literature Award, a Stonewall Book Award. The Stonewall Book Awards were created by the American Libraries Association's Rainbow Roundtable and are the oldest awards for LGBTQIA+ books. Many of these titles are available for checkout in Mullins Library.

"The collection of children's books in Mullins Library, which can be used by anyone affiliated with the university, is a critical resource for education interns on campus preparing to become PK-12 educators," said Laura Cameron, Education Librarian. "Reading and studying children's books with LGBTQIA+ content in K12 classrooms is still controversial to some, but it is critical that young queer children see themselves and their families reflected in their libraries and schools. This month's guide focuses on books with LGBTQIA+ content and includes links to related discussion questions and teaching guides to help prepare teachers or parents to discuss these books with children."

The Children's Literature Collection is located on the lobby level of Mullins Library in the northwest corner of the building. The collection includes books suitable for children pre-K to 12th grade. The collection is organized into eight sections to allow for easier browsing: picture books, early readers, chapter and middle grade books, young adult novels, graphic novels, traditional tales, biographies and non-fiction. Each section is identified with a five-digit code, color-coded spine stickers and shelf signage.
