Discussing High Impact Practices on Our Campus

U of A team preparing to meet with Eyra Perez during the AAC&U Virtual 2021 Institute on High Impact Practices and Student Success

All university faculty, staff and students are invited to register here to participate in the high-impact educational practices (HIP) discussions from 9 a.m. to noon, Friday, July 30, in the Arkansas Union Ballroom. Seating is limited.

Examples of all 11 high-impact practices are present on our campus. Many will be showcased either as part of the Virtual HIP Escape Room available to the campus community July 26-29 or the U of A HIP Library. Information will become available at hips.uark.edu.

According to the AAC&U, the 11 high-impact practices are:

  • First-Year Seminars,
  • Common Intellectual Experiences, 
  • Learning Communities, 
  • Writing-Intensive Courses, 
  • Collaborative Assignments and Projects,
  • Undergraduate Research,
  • Diversity/Global Learning,
  • ePortfolios,
  • Service learning/Community-Based Learning, 
  • Internships and
  • Capstone Courses and Projects. 

Wellness Programs are also high-impact practices for U of A students and will be included in the conversations.

In addition, a team from the U of A attended the Association of American Colleges and Universities' 2021 Virtual Institute on High-Impact Practices and Student Success in June. Team members included Deb Korth, team leader, teaching professor and director of Student Success for Arts and Sciences; Stephanie G. Adams, director of faculty development; Anthony DiNicola, inclusion liaison for the Office of the Chancellor; Brian Hurley, assistant director for academic engagement, Student Success Center; C.J. Mathis, director of TRIO Student Support Services; and Lynn Meade, instructor in the Department of Communication and co-director of Teaching Faculty and Support Center. 

The HIP Discussions are sponsored by the ARSC Student Success Team; Center for Multicultural and Diversity Education; Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; Student Success Center; Teaching Faculty and Support Center; Teaching Innovation and Pedagogical Support; and many others.
