Bumpers College Ready for Come As You Arkansas Day-Long Event

Come as You Arkansas is an all-day event on campus celebrating the U of A's 150th anniversary, and the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences is playing a big role.

The event, with around 50 interactive activities highlighting the U of A's mission, vision, history and future, runs through the day, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, Sept. 10. The day is intended for everyone, from alumni and new visitors, to families, faculty and staff. The activities, stations and booths illustrate the U of A's innovative ideas, research and far-reaching impact.

The college is hosting the Bumpers College Block Party on the Maudine Sanders Student Plaza and Garden and Hawkins Family Terrace on the south side of the AFLS Building from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., and the college's School of Human Environmental Sciences is coordinating "The Heart of Hospitality" experience at the Union Mall.

"The Heart of Hospitality" section is where visitors can pick up a Come as You Arkansas program, receive concierge service, including help in planning the day, campus maps, directions and details about events across campus.

The Bumpers College Block Party features booths and activities from most departments in the college. Food science is planning to make chocolate with a 3-D printer; agricultural education, communications and technology is taking photos of visitors with props available, and entomology and plant pathology is providing insect and plant displays with roach races, all in the atrium of the AFLS Building. In addition, entomology and plant pathology are hosting an open house at the Arthropod Museum on the south side of campus, on Mitchell Street.

Outside the AFLS Building, animal science is offering interaction with live goats, sheep and a mini horse; agricultural economics and agribusiness is illustrating the impact of agriculture in Arkansas; crop, soil and environmental sciences is demonstrating soil typing and plant identification by seeds; and horticulture is providing a planting activity and sunflower giveaway. Poultry science is providing omelet and chicken tender demonstrations outside its John W. Tyson Building, which is next to AFLS.

Guests at the Bumpers College Block Party can get a map of the college's area, and anyone visiting each station and validated by staff at the booths gets a prize.

In addition, the School of Human Environmental Sciences is also providing experiences with food, nutrition and health, hospitality, a fashion show and more in the mainstage area at the Union Mall.
