Plaza de las Americas Celebrates Hispanic Heritage and Latinx Month

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage and Latinx month, the U of A will host the 16th annual Plaza de las Americas event from 4-5:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 24, at the Arkansas Union Mall.

Plaza de las Americas will feature music, dancing, food and more in a celebration of Latin American and Spanish-speaking cultures in Arkansas. Guests are invited to visit booths representing various Latin American and Spanish-speaking countries. The cultural and educational event provides campus and community members with an opportunity to learn about other cultures.

Exhibit booths will be open from 4-4:45 p.m., as event volunteers share cultural items or photos to help attendees better visualize the Latin American and other Spanish-speaking cultures. Attendees can also visit "tertulia" tables to have conversations and play games with fluent Spanish speakers.

Music and performances will be held from 4:45-5:30 p.m., including a small dance party, Baile. During Baile, attendees will learn different types of Latin American dances.

Plaza de las Americas has been a celebration of the community in Northwest Arkansas since 2005. It is one of many Hispanic Heritage & Latinx Month events taking place throughout the area.

Sponsors for Plaza de las Americas include: Latin American and Latino Studies; Department of World Languages, Literatures and Cultures; Center for Multicultural and Diversity Education; Office of International Students and Scholars, University Housing; La Oficina Latina; New Student and Family Programs; IDEALS Institute; Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; Latino Alumni Society; and U of A Hispanic Heritage and Latinx Month Committee.
