College of Engineering Celebrates First Generation Week
The College of Engineering is celebrating First Generation Week by recognizing first-generation college students with cookies and camaraderie from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, at the top of the ramp in Bell Engineering Center. Please look for the "College of Engineering Celebrates First-Generation Students" banner. Sometimes known as "First-Gen Week," the commemoration is meant to highlight the successes of first-generation faculty, staff and students and to promote awareness of systemic barriers related to higher education.
This week also marks the 56th anniversary of the signing of the 1965 Higher Education Act. The act was passed to ensure that every individual has access to higher education, regardless of income or ZIP code. The act governs student-aid programs, federal aid to colleges and oversight of teacher preparation programs. The act has helped millions of students become the first members of their families to earn college degrees. To read more about the Higher Education Act, click here.
"As the College of Engineering's new assistant director of diversity, equity and inclusion, I want to call attention to the importance of celebrating first-generation college students," said Patrice Sims. "College provides a chance for educational, social and career opportunities as well as economic mobility for their entire family. When a first-generation student is successful, the entire community is successful."
