Nursing Student, Razorback Cheerleader Seeks to Uplift

University of Arkansas student Emma Hulbert has been a goal-getter since middle school.

Earning spots in the Eleanor Mann School of Nursing and on the Razorback cheer team was at the top of her list when she graduated from Siloam Springs High School in 2020.

Check, check.

But Hulbert isn't out for the accolades. Her goals are linked to a desire to help others.

"Both my grandfather and aunt have multiple sclerosis, and I have witnessed them being taken care of by exceptional — and struggling — nurses," she said. "I want to be one of the exceptional nurses. I understand the tremendous impact a nurse can have on patients and family members."

Hulbert, who speaks Spanish, is committed to serving patients of all backgrounds. She's most interested in pursuing pediatric trauma or oncology nursing.

Hulbert's favorite community outreach project as a cheerleader is visiting nursing homes. Lifting the residents' spirits gives her a happiness boost, too. "I love connecting with Hog fans of all ages," she said.

The Razorback spirit squad family is tight, and she's soaking up all the life lessons. "Through work weeks, camps, and team bonding exercises, we have learned how to encourage, respect, and appreciate one another. These skills are crucial to an athletic team, but also beneficial in future occupations," she said.

No matter what she's pursuing, Hulbert is all in. She's been a competitive and recreational cheerleader for 12 years. She was named an All-American Cheerleader three times in high school and was the award-winning captain of her cross-country team. As with college life, she balanced sports activities with community outreach. Hulbert participated in various mission trips around the United States, serving at-risk families and children. She also served as a tutor for the Dogwood Literacy Council, helping several of her clients on their path to U.S. citizenship.

At the U of A, she was one of six incoming freshmen to receive prestigious Bodenhamer Fellowships. She was also named an Arkansas Governor's Scholar and a National Merit Scholar.

Hulbert just wrapped up her second football season and is looking forward to starting clinical rotations through the nursing program.
