Chinese New Year Celebration Festival Rescheduled for March 11
Chinese Students and Scholars Association

The Chinese Students and Scholars Association invites students to attend the celebration of the Chinese New Year at 6:30 p.m., Friday, March 11, at the Reynolds Center. This event is for students only. Students can attend the event with their student ID.

The Chinese New Year marks the first day of spring and the beginning of the year in the Chinese lunar calendar. Tied to the lunar calendar, the holiday began as a time for feasting and to honor household and heavenly deities, as well as ancestors.

Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year, is the festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional lunisolar and solar Chinese calendar. This event is also celebrated in a large number of countries in other East and Southeast Asian cultures. China has been the major country where the Chinese New Year was celebrated for more than 3,000 years. Celebration of the Chinese New Year introduces the common culture of Chinese to the students from all around the world.

Chinese Students and Scholars Association aims to celebrate the Chinese customs to bring integrity to the Chinese community on campus, as well as introduce it to other students who are interested in such events. A full list of the Chinese New Year customs and history is available on Wikipedia.

This event is supported by the Student Activities Fee as a funded event by the Associated Student Government and is free to all currently enrolled U of A students who pay the student activities fee.
