The CORD, the new home of student success and the HIP and Well Conference

A campus-wide, interdisciplinary collaboration on student success, High-Impact Educational Practices (HIP) and wellness at the U of A is slated for July 29, 2022, at the Are We Still HIP & Well? Examing High Impact Practices and Wellness at the U of A in 2022 Conference in the new Cordia Harrington Center for Excellence (CORD).

Sign up to attend and spread the word to other faculty, staff, administrators and students interested in this commitment to student success at the U of A.

"Approximately 65 members of the campus community will present their experience and expertise on high-impact practices and wellness, all of which support our central goal: ensuring the success of our students here at the U of A," said Deborah Korth, conference host and director of Student Success for Fulbright College. "We're excited about this diverse group of more than 200 attendees at the conference in the new CORD."

The conference will include a variety of presentation types — lectures, brainstorming sessions, panel discussions and poster presentations — given by members of the campus community.

Tia Brown McNair will deliver the conference's keynote address: "Are our HIPs Student-Ready? Strategies for Supporting the Success and Well-Being of Today's Students." McNair is the vice president in the Office of Diversity, Equity and Student Success and executive director for the Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation Campus Centers at the American Association of Colleges and Universities.

"I am excited about exploring answers to the question, 'Are we still HIP and well?' together," said Trevor Francis, associate vice provost and director for Student Success at the U of A. "The conference, which will discuss links between high-impact practices and wellness, is sure to produce new collaborations, new research areas and new approaches to our high-impact practices."

The conference goals include:

  • Accentuating High-Impact Educational Practices (HIPs) implemented on our campus
  • Highlighting activities concerning wellness and well-being of campus students, faculty and/or staff
  • Exploring the creation of a campus culture of wellness that promotes HIPs
  • Promoting conversations among faculty and staff centered on students and student success programs and projects

According to the Association of American Colleges and Universities, research indicates that the following HIPs promote success, especially for under-served students:

  • First-year experiences
  • Common intellectual experiences
  • Learning communities
  • Writing-intensive courses
  • Collaborative assignments and projects
  • Undergraduate research
  • Diversity/global learning
  • ePortfolios
  • Service learning
  • Community-based learning
  • Internships
  • Capstone courses and projects
