Amanda Fleming, a U of A master's degree student in food science, has been awarded an American Wine Society Educational Foundation/Banfi Auction Scholarship. The scholarship is for $3,500.

Fleming's research is focused on "Investigating Quality Attributes and Wine Production Methods of Arkansas-Grown Grapes."

Fleming works under the guidance of Renee Threlfall, enology and viticulture expert in the Department of Food Science, and with the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station, the research arm of the U of A System Division of Agriculture. Threlfall and Fleming also work on the Arkansas Quality Wine Program, funded by the Arkansas Department of Agriculture Specialty Crop Block grant to highlight wines grown and made in Arkansas.

Fleming has more than 10 years of experience working as an enologist and winemaker in California, New Zealand and Arkansas. Enology and viticulture are the sciences of winemaking and grape growing.

"I am impressed with Amanda's passion for the field of viticulture and enology and her professionalism, and look forward to her completing her master's and pursuing her Ph.D.," Threlfall said.

The American Wine Society promotes wine appreciation through education by developing relevant, quality wine education resources that directly benefit and empower AWS chapters and members across the country.

In 2021, Fleming was awarded two other national scholarships, one from the American Society for Enology and Viticulture and one from the ASEV-Eastern Section.
