The Russian Conversation Table 'The Nose' Today

The Russian Conversation Table "The Nose" is an informal gathering for anyone interested in practicing Russian through games. It meets every other Thursday inside the Union at the Hill Coffee from 5-6 p.m.

This semester, "The Nose" will include not only practicing of the Russian language, but also an introduction to Ukrainian language, history and literature. The majority of Ukraine's population is bilingual. People speak both Russian and Ukrainian, and even a mixture of both languages. Knowing Russian helps with learning Ukrainian because both languages are in the same language group. A visiting student from Ukraine, Anatolii Nezgodiuk, will be in charge of the conversation table.

The name of the group comes from Nikolai Gogol's short story "The Nose." Gogol was born in the Russian empire in what is now Ukraine. Gogol spoke both Ukrainian and Russian, and also knew some Yiddish words, which he incorporated into his works. He chose to write in Russian, however, because it was the main colonial language of the Russian empire.

"The Nose" meets every other Thursday inside the Union at the Hill Coffee from 5-6 p.m.

"The Nose" will meet on the following days:

  • Dec. 1
