Honors College to Host Pulse Discussion Around Roe v. Wade

This summer, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization overruling the federal right to an abortion set forth by Roe v. Wade in 1973. The decision has fundamentally altered the medical and legal landscape across the country in the weeks since, raising questions about the ruling's short- and long-term implications. The Honors College will present a panel of faculty experts who will discuss the decision and related subjects from 4-5:30 p.m. next Thursday, Sept. 8, in the Honors Student Lounge.

Faculty members who will provide context and lead a question-and-answer session include:

  • Lisa M. Corrigan, professor of communication and director of the Gender Studies Program, affiliate faculty in African & African American Studies and Latin American Studies
  • Jill Wieber Lens, Robert A. Leflar Professor of Law, associate dean for research and faculty development, School of Law
  • Janine A. Parry, professor and director of Arkansas Poll, Department of Political Science
  • Dr. Huda Sharaf, medical director for the Pat Walker Health Center, physician

Professor Janine A. Parry will serve as moderator.

"The Honors College Pulse series partners top experts on campus with students, and together they investigate the most pressing issues of our day," said Honors College Dean Lynda Coon. "Considering the impact of Roe v. Wade on our campus, the Sept. 8 installment of Honors College Pulse is not to be missed. All are welcome."

This Honors College Pulse discussion series began in 2016 following the presidential election, and was named in remembrance of victims of the Pulse nightclub shootings. Since then, it has featured conversations around the Dakota Access Pipeline Project, the legal ramifications and decisions related to hate crimes, ways to fight local hunger and poverty as well as the war in Ukraine.
