The default traffic speed on streets surrounding the U of A campus has been reduced to 20 mph.

The U of A has lowered the default speed limit through the campus area from 25 mph to 20 mph as part of a collaborative effort with the city of Fayetteville. Pedestrians outnumber cars on the U of A campus, and more students are choosing alternative transportation each year. With this in mind, the decision was made to reduce traffic speeds through the campus. This change was also implemented in all residential areas of Fayetteville.

The change is, in part, a response to a collaborative process that involved Associated Student Government to re-evaluate what speed limits were appropriate for the U of A campus.

Drivers should use keen awareness on campus due to multiple crosswalks intersecting roads, bicyclists and e-scooters sharing the road, and parallel parking on many streets. Safety and common sense may sometimes mean driving more slowly than the posted speed limit, and drivers should never operate their vehicle at a speed that endangers others, regardless of the speed limit.

Please drive cautiously, share the roads and remember that we're all in this together.
