Entomology Grad Student Twaibu Selected Through MANRRS to Attend PestWorld Conference

Amina Twaibu, a Bumpers College master's degree student in entomology, is researching the "Effectiveness of Different Newly-Labelled Insecticides to Rice Weevil, Red Flour Beetle and Confused Beetle Infesting Stored Corn and Other Grains."

Amina Twaibu, U of A graduate student, has been selected to attend the national PestWorld Conference in Boston.

Twaibu, a master's degree student in entomology in the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences, was chosen by the National Pest Management Association Diversity Council.

She was one of two students nationally selected through Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences with all expenses covered by NPMA.

Twaibu receives registration and access to general and education sessions, keynote speaker events, the exhibit hall, networking events, hotel lodging and airfare.

She works with adviser Neel Joshi, a faculty member in the Department and Entomology and Plant Pathology and a researcher and scientist with the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station, the research arm of the U of A System Division of Agriculture.

Twaibu earned her bachelor's degree in agriculture in 2016 from Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources in Malawi.

Her primary research is on the "Effectiveness of Different Newly-Labelled Insecticides to Rice Weevil, Red Flour Beetle and Confused Beetle Infesting Stored Corn and Other Grains."

The PestWorld Conference brings together thousands of pest management professionals and industry suppliers from around the world for network and collaboration opportunities, as well as training and competency.

The NPMA supports the pest management industry's commitment to the protection of public health, food and property and supports members in being professional, knowledgeable and profitable through education, industry leadership, public policy advocacy and growth of the market.

MANRRS promotes academic and professional advancement by empowering minorities in agriculture, natural resources and related sciences; initiates and participates in activities and programs that ensure ethnic minorities will be involved in and associated with agricultural sciences and related fields; and pledges to work for the inclusion, achievement and advancement of all people in agricultural sciences.

U of A's MANRRS chapter offers academic support, networking opportunities and career development. It is housed in Bumpers College, but is open to all majors and students on campus. Jacquelyn Wiersma-Mosley, professor of human development and family sciences, is the faculty adviser for MANRRS.
