Teaching and Faculty Support Center Conferences and Awards on Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

The Cordes Teaching and Faculty Support Center will offer two conferences and the annual Paul Cronan Award this coming year. Submission of presentations on teaching and innovation in the classroom are sought for the conferences, and nominations for the Cronan Award are also requested:

  • Teaching and Learning Institute - regional conference on Zoom with Arkansas and LSU.
    Date of the conference: April 11
    Proposals due by Friday, Feb. 10
  • U of A Teaching Symposium - held in person at the Arkansas Union
    Date of the conference: April 12
    Proposals due by Friday, Feb. 10
  • Submissions for the Paul Cronan Technology Teaching Excellence Award
    Presented at the 2023 Annual Awards Ceremony in September

Call for Proposals

2023 Teaching and Learning Institute
Sponsored by the U of A and Louisiana State University

Submissions are being accepted for the inaugural virtual conference, 2023 Teaching and Learning Institute, to be held from 1-4 p.m. CDT Tuesday, April 11. Proposals are currently being accepted for posters that address topics of interest to teachers in higher education. Submissions can be made until Friday, Feb. 10, by filling out the form at: https://forms.office.com/r/aebxT91Usf. Submissions will be peer-reviewed, and a notification of acceptance will be sent by March 3. Accepted posters will be published to the ScholarWorks network.

We welcome submissions of poster presentations that address various aspects of teaching college/university students. Below is a list of some topical areas, but compelling ideas that fall outside of these areas are welcome.

  • Classroom activities
  • Engaging students in the classroom
  • Supporting student learning
  • Technology to facilitate learning
  • Homework and grading
  • Assessment activities
  • Sharing specific course structures and approaches
  • Stress and wellbeing of faculty and students
  • Time management for teachers
  • Embedding metacognitive strategies in teaching
  • Innovative instruction

Awards will be provided for best poster content and best poster presentation.

Teaching Posters
TFSC issues "Call for Teaching Posters" to be presented at the U of A Teaching Symposium

Are you doing something innovative in your classes? Have you conducted classroom research designed to improve teaching and learning? If so, please consider sharing your experiences and results with your colleagues by presenting a poster at The U of A Teaching Symposium on Wednesday, April 12, 2023. The event will be held in the Arkansas Union, with posters presented from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. Snacks will be served.

To submit a poster proposal, submit your title, author information and a 250-word-maximum abstract using the form at https://forms.office.com/r/yfbTFANPGi no later than 5 p.m. on Feb. 10, 2023. Proposals will be peer reviewed, and authors will be notified by 5 p.m. on March 3, 2023. The TFSC has funds available to pay the cost of printing a limited number of posters. If you would like to be considered for this funding, please indicate this in your form.

Note: You may present the same information at the Teaching and Learning Institute and the U of A Teaching Symposium.

Paul Cronan Award
Call for nominations for the Paul Cronan Technology Teaching Excellence Award

Description: The Paul Cronan Technology Teaching Excellence Award recognizes a faculty member who has creatively used technology to enhance their teaching at the U of A. The award consists of a recognition plaque and a $500 Teaching Enhancement Grant from the Cordes TFSC.

Eligibility: Faculty (at all ranks, including staff who may teach courses, regardless of tenure status) who have taught for a minimum of three years at the U of A. We anticipate that a single recipient will be designated each year.

Selection: The committee shall consist of one TFSC co-director, one previous Cronan Award recipient and a selected faculty member. Nominees may either self-nominate or be nominated by a faculty member, staff member or student. To apply for the award, a Microsoft Forms document should be submitted that includes descriptions of how that nominee has used technology to enhance their teaching and a discussion of how integrating that technology contributed to student success. The link is forms.office.com/r/cbw88icuvg. The recipient will be recognized during the annual Teaching Awards Reception. The deadline for submission is Friday, Feb. 10.

Criteria: The following criteria shall be used in selecting the recipient of the award:

  1. Explanation of technology used in the classroom (required) - Limit: 750 words
    1. Description of technology.
    2. Creativity of the use of technology.
    3. How the technology advances course and/or curriculum objectives and student learning.
    4. Evidence of student success (related to technology).

(These are options; it is not required to address all).

  1. Evidence of an improvement in student learning - Limit: 750 words
    1. Student comments related to the use of technology in the classroom.
    2. Student evaluation enhancement.
    3. Evidence of course or curriculum enhancement.
    4. Employer/company comments.
    5. Other.
