School of Art to Host Inaugural Events in the New Studio and Design Center

The School of Art in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences will host the first student and community events in the new Studio and Design Center on Friday and Saturday, March 31 and April 1, since opening in January.

The events include a chainsaw carving demonstration by visiting sculptors Robyn Horn and Sandra Sell, as well as an exhibition, designer talk and workshop by designer, illustrator and educator Alexandria Canchola. These are the first public events in the new 154,000 state-of-the-art Studio and Design Center, and the events are free and open to the public.

The U of A School of Art's Sculpting in Time, Sound, and Matter registered student organization is hosting the carving demonstration by visiting sculptors Horn and Sell.

Horn and Sell will give artist talks on Thursday, March 30, at the Sculpture Building, room 122, in the Windgate Art and Design District at 2 p.m.

The two Arkansas native visiting sculptors will give a chainsaw carving demonstration at the new Studio and Design Center courtyard Friday, March 31, from 2-4 p.m.

In addition, the School of Art's graphic design area is hosting an exhibition and designer talk featuring Alexandria Canchola Friday, March 31, from 5-7 p.m.

Canchola designs, illustrates and creates immersive large-scale installations that are inspired by narrative, color, letterforms and filmmaking. Her personal approach to design stems from her desire to empower people and make a difference by crafting work that is engaging and meaningful.

Students and the community are also invited to a workshop with Canchola on Saturday, April 1, from 1-3 p.m. at the Studio and Design Center.

In this workshop, Give Your Social Universe a Shape, Canchola will discuss how to design a happier life. Participants will be guided through a series of prompts meant to illustrate the significance of their relationships. Attendees will explore their creativity by producing an illustrated zine that will help them envision and document the human connections they would like to give shape in their life.

The Studio and Design Center is located in south Fayetteville at 696 W. Praxis Ln.; parking available at the SOAX Building, 601 M.L.K. Jr. Blvd., and the Sculpture Building lot 67 after 5 p.m. or on the weekends at 744 Hill Ave. in Fayetteville.

In the case of inclement weather on Friday for the chainsaw sculpture demonstration, the event will be moved to the Sculpture Building covered west entrance, located behind the Studio and Design Center.
