Seminar for Graduate Students on Islamic Philosophy and Theology in the 12th Century April 7

Ayman Shihadeh, professor of Arabic and Islamic intellectual history and the head of the School of History, Religions and Philosophies at SOAS University of London, will give a talk to graduate students titled "New Insights on Moral Philosophy in Premodern Islamic Thought" from 4-5 p.m. Friday, April 7, in room 102 of Gearhart Hall.

The presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer session and a reception from 5-6 p.m. in the Graduate Students Lounge. All U of A graduate students are welcome to attend. The speaker is invited by the King Fahd Center for Middle East Studies and is cosponsored by the Graduate School and International Education as part of its efforts to bring diverse and international voices to campus.

The seminar is also supported by many U of A departments and programs, including the Department of History, Department of English, Department of Philosophy, Department of Sociology and Criminology, Medieval and Renaissance Studies, Religious Studies, Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies programs, all from the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences.

Shihadeh is the editor-in-chief of the Bulletin of SOAS and the philosophy and theology editor at the Encyclopedia of Islam, published by Brill. Shihadeh specializes in the history of philosophy and religious thought in the premodern Islamic world and has published two monographs, several edited books and authored many articles on the subject. His wide range of research interests include ethical theory in Islamic theology, philosophy and jurisprudence.
