May JEDI Hour to Feature Discussion on Mental Health
The College of Engineering Office of Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion's May JEDI Hour will feature Shaun Mayo, chief people officer for the Arizona Cardinals and its affiliated companies, on the topic "Supporting the Whole Person" for Mental Health Awareness Month.
Mayo will discuss how implementing micro-steps will assist in boosting your mental health. In addition, he will provide tips on how to support your whole self in and outside the workplace.
The session will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 4. Registration is not necessary, and all are welcome.
As we know, mental health is a global concern, said Patrice Storey, the college's assistant director of Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. Therefore, providing the necessary resources to ensure a thriving campus community is essential.
According to Sarah Wilson, guest blogger for the American Society of Engineering Education, in her article "Prioritizing Mental Health and Wellness in Engineering," she found that while the prevalence of mental health concerns among students is a concern across all majors, national data show that engineering students experiencing mental health distress are less likely to seek professional help compared to their peers (46% of engineers vs. 62% non-engineers).
Furthermore, this treatment gap persists across different engineering students sub-populations, such as cisgender men (42% of engineers vs. 52% of non-engineers), Black students (40% of engineers vs. 50% of non-engineers) and first-generation college students (42% of engineers vs. 56% of non-engineers).
Mayo is a human resources strategist who has made a name for himself by driving business results. He has over 15 years of human resources leadership experience delivering innovative people solutions, developing and managing agile teams, and helping build a high-performance culture that promotes diversity and inclusion.
Born and raised in Houston, Mayo received his bachelor's in business administration from Texas Southern University and his M.B.A. from the University of Houston – Clear Lake. In addition, he holds the Human Resource Certification Institute Senior Professional in Human Resources designation.
Mayo has held human resources roles of increasing responsibility with companies such as Macy's, Amazon, Walmart and the Arizona Cardinals Football Club. He has a strong passion for developing leaders and a commitment to service and advocacy to foster a more inclusive environment.
