An academic counselor and success coach in mechanical engineering has been named the Employee of the Fourth Quarter for the College of Engineering.

Johnathon Paape joined the college in February 2021 and immediately became an integral part of the department's team, said his supervisor, Melynda Hart, operations manager.

In addition to advising the department's students, he works directly with at-risk students to ensure their success and performs degree audits for graduating seniors. He also coordinates student-success workshops and initiatives, refines department processes, compiles student data reports and helps faculty advisors.

"Johnathon's demeanor and approach to students, faculty and staff is beyond anyone's expectations. He is always smiling, never loses his patience and has an easygoing manner that makes him incredibly enjoyable to work with," Hart said.

Associate Professor Uche Wejinya said Paape quickly became a vital asset to the daily functioning of the department, prioritizing in-person meetings with students and helping faculty streamline processes for advising, among many other accomplishments.

"He has gone above and beyond the scope of his job description in service of this department while keeping a great attitude and wonderful sense of humor that has really helped our department," Wejinya said.

Multiple mechanical engineering faculty members wrote comments for Paape's nomination, complimenting his quick response to questions, knowledge of resources for students and going the extra mile to help.

Assistant professor Han Hu said Paape has prepared reports for him that have helped him connect and engage with students.

"I cannot be more thankful," he said.

Darin Nutter, head of mechanical engineering said, "Johnathon is receiving well-deserved recognition.  He has a heart for students and their well-being.  His efforts within MEEG are highly impactful and appreciated by all."

Each Employee of the Quarter receives a monetary award and certificate.
