Mechanical Engineering Student Awarded the 2023 FutureFuel Scholarship Award

Jackson Burnett, a senior mechanical engineering student in the College of Engineering, has been awarded the 2023 FutureFuel Scholarship Award. The Terry Martin Endowed Outstanding Intern Award sponsored by FutureFuel Chemical Company is a $1,000 scholarship provided annually to an outstanding intern or interns. 

Burnett spent this summer with Garver's Buildings team in their downtown Kansas City office as a mechanical engineering intern.

"The main project we worked on was tracking and drawing domestic water piping for a large medical center in Topeka, Kansas," Burnett said. "We worked on drafting those plumbing systems in Revit with the main goal of making the domestic water in the hospital cleaner and safer for its patients and employees, along with a few smaller projects related to plumbing and HVAC design."

Burnett said through this internship he's learned a lot about plumbing and HVAC systems and how they are important for keeping people safe and healthy in buildings. He also had the opportunity to enhance his technical skills by using Revit, HAP and Bluebeam nearly every day while on the job.

"I'm very honored to receive the Terry Martin Outstanding Intern Award sponsored by FutureFuel. I would like to thank my mentor and supervisor, Zac Buckmiller, for submitting a nomination on my behalf, and to Garver's Buildings team for having had me as an intern this summer, which made this all possible," he said.  

The scholarship was established in 2014 by FutureFuel in recognition of Terry Martin, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. Martin has provided service and mentorship to students in the Electrical Engineering Department and the College of Engineering during his tenure as a faculty member, assistant department head of electrical engineering and senior associate dean for academics.

The scholarship is open to students in the College of Engineering who have worked a full-time or part-time internship within the academic year. Preference is given to mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemical engineering and computer science majors.
