New Course in Middle East Geography

The Department of Geosciences and the Middle East Studies Program are offering a new, innovative online course, GEOS 4043 Geography of the Middle East and North Africa this fall semester 2023.
Using extensive multi-media presentations examining history, architecture, landscapes, climate, rituals, customs, cuisine, travel experience, all with an insight into these fascinating regions, the course will introduce you to the breadth and beauty of the Middle East and North Africa — from Morocco to Turkey.
Starting in far western Morocco, we will experience the Atlas Mountains and incredible cuisine of Morocco, across spectacular Tunisia and the gorgeous beaches at Hammamat to its Roman ruins at Thuburbo. We then stroll across Egypt looking at its fantastic monuments, culture, and unique mega-cities, and into Saudi Arabia's vast desert, Mecca, Medina, and its emerging great cities. Continuing east, we travel across the Gulf states with Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Qatar's cities of the future, into the coffee highlands of Yemen and the Grand Canyon of Oman. We then walk cross Jordan's ancient landscape and bustling cities with a special day trip into Petra — the rose-red city half as old as time. We'll then head north to learn about the special history, art and beauty of Lebanon, finally ending our tour with a saunter through intriguing Instabul, Ephesus, Cappadocia, and the maginficent turquoise coast of Turkey.
