New Faculty to Be Offered Teaching Portfolio Opportunity
Photo Submitted

The Cordes Teaching and Faculty Support Center and the Teaching Academy are combining forces to offer new faculty in their first two years of teaching at the U of A an opportunity to create a teaching portfolio to highlight their accomplishments. To be able to complete the portfolio, faculty should sign up by Sept. 30.

The teaching portfolio would require you to:

  • Write a five- to six-page document or create an e-portfolio
  • Attend four of the following five new faculty luncheons (September, October, November, February or March).
  • Answer four of the five prompts and write a philosophy (explained at the September New Faculty Luncheons — reach out to shook@uark.edu for more information)
  • Complete your teaching portfolio based on prompts and content presented and applied to your personal teaching by March 30.
  • Be matched with a Teaching Academy member to read your portfolio and provide advice for you on how to improve it by April 20.
  • Submit your final portfolio by May 15.
  • The teaching portfolio is only open to faculty in their first or second year of teaching at the U of A at this time.
  • Once completed, you would be recognized at the 2024 Teaching Reception with a certificate and article in the Arkansas News.
  • Only sign up if you are committed to completing the portfolio, as we will be matching you with a Teaching Academy member, and we want to be respectful of their time.
  • You can still attend the new faculty lunches and not participate in the teaching portfolio.

Why Create a Portfolio?

  • Provides evidence of teaching, research and service.
  • Creates a way to evaluate a faculty member's work.
  • Student ratings and lists of publications don't describe professional priorities and strengths.
  • Displays your accomplishments for the record.
  • Reflective evidence-based collection that shows the scope, quality and significance of a faculty member's achievements.
  • Receive recognitions for your commitment to teaching.

A portfolio is not an exhaustive representation of your work, but instead represents the qualities of your performance that you want to highlight.

How Will a Portfolio Help You Succeed at the U of A?

  • Personnel decisions
  • Improve performance
  • Award selection
  • For grants

Format:

  • You can use either a traditional Word Document format or develop an e-portfolio.
  • Site to develop the portfolio: wordpressua.uark.edu. Tutorials: wordpressua.uark.edu/user-guide.
  • U of A Teaching Academy members will review and provide guidance to the members creating a teaching portfolio.

To be able to complete the portfolio, faculty should sign up by Sept. 30 at:  https://forms.office.com/r/yFX769k8eD (Same link as above, provided again for your convenience).
