Enhancing Campus Safety: UAPD Offers Two Safety Apps

Ensuring the safety of the U of A community has never been more critical. Considering this, the U of A Police Department is urging all campus members to familiarize themselves with two important apps: SafeZone and What3Words.
"UAPD is committed to staying on the forefront of technology to better serve our community," Chief Stephen Gahagans said. "The SafeZone Mobile Safety App and What3Words greatly improve our public safety initiatives. Both apps allow for more efficient location services during times of need and greatly assist in improving our response times."
What3Words: A Location Services App
UAPD recently began using What3Words, an app designed to simplify location descriptions and aid in pinpointing individuals during emergencies. UAPD encourages the public to download this free app and be ready to provide their What3Words address in times of need, even in areas where internet access is spotty or unavailable.
Emergency services often lose time trying to locate a caller, especially in areas without addresses, such as inside buildings or unmarked rural roads. In challenging locations, 911 callers can provide their What3Words address via the app, ensuring that responders can find their exact location. For those without the app, UAPD dispatchers will send a link to the mobile site: https://us.findme.w3w.co, allowing callers to read out the three words to the operator. The app requires a GPS signal to display your What3Words address.
The What3Words app can also help users navigate places without traditional addresses, such as parks, beaches or specific entrances to large shopping malls. Running clubs, hikers and hotels can also use What3Words addresses to simplify navigation.
SafeZone: A Campus Safety App
The SafeZone app offers a direct lifeline to UAPD during emergencies or for added peace of mind while on campus. This app is available to all students, faculty and staff, assuring that prompt police assistance is always within reach.
SafeZone enables you to connect with UAPD wherever you are on campus. The app features various options, including:
- Help: For non-emergency assistance.
- First Aid Call: When medical assistance is required.
- Emergency: In cases of threats or urgent assistance.
- Check-in / Check-in Timer: Share your real-time location with UAPD when walking alone or studying in secluded areas.
