Digital Humanities Meet-Up Recap: AI and Society Panel

The third DH Meet-Up of the fall semester took place at the World Languages and Digital Humanities Studio on Oct. 12, and it kicked off a series of meet-ups centered on artificial intelligence. The first of the series was "AI and Society," and the following will be "AI and Storytelling" on Thursday, Oct. 26, and "AI and Teaching" on Thursday, Nov. 30.  

The Meet-Up featured three panelists: Lu Zhang, assistant professor of computer science; Nadia Issa, teaching assistant professor of art; and J.L.A. Donohue, assistant professor of philosophy, and it was moderated by Curtis Maughan, director of the studio and a teaching assistant professor of world languages, literatures and cultures. 

The diverse backgrounds of the panelists made for some fruitful discussions. Students from Maughan's Intro to Digital Humanities class (WLLC 398-V: Special Topics) were in attendance and had great insight, as they studied AI topics for several weeks this semester. Philosophy students also came to support their professor! Over 20 people attended the event and discussed crucial issues surrounding AI in higher education and in modern society at large, such as the end of the college essay, the impact on academic integrity and AI in Hollywood as seen in the new Mission: Impossible film.

After the meet-up, attendees enjoyed refreshments catered by Chuzos Sabor Latino and mingled with their peers.
