Join the U of A campus community in celebrating Día de los Muertos by visiting our community ofrenda (altar) in the International Connections lounge and by participating in a series of events. All students, staff, faculty and community members are invited to get involved.

The community ofrenda will be up between Oct. 28 and Nov. 2 in the International Connections Lounge in the Arkansas Union. If you are interested in contributing anything, please notify Cecilia Grossberger Medina (xgrossb@uark.edu) or Sophia Ordaz (saordaz@uark.edu).

The calendar of event is as follows:

  • Ofrenda Making Workshop on Oct. 31, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Come to the MC classroom on the fourth floor of the Arkansas Union to make a personal ofrenda! The activity will be opened with a prayer from María Cristina Moroles, an Indigenous Mexican elder who is the matriarch of the Arco Iris Earth Care Project. Art activities will be led by members of the Art Education RSO. Refreshments will be provided. To reserve your spot, RSVP with the following form, where you may submit a photo to be printed of a loved one who has passed on.
  • Skull Plant Holder Activity on Nov. 1, 2-3 p.m.: Join us in the International Connections Lounge to make pot plants in skull-shaped ceramic. Growing a plant is a great way to remember a loved one.
  • Catrina Fashion Show and Contest on Nov. 2, 6:30-7:30 p.m.: Experience the breathtaking and elegant catrina dresses created by fashion designer Rulli Torres at a fashion show in the International Connections Lounge. Attendees are encouraged to come wearing catrina face paint.
