University of Arkansas System Adopts Common Course Numbering
Course numbers are changing starting in fall 2024 as part of a University of Arkansas System initiative to develop a comprehensive index of subject codes and course numbers for all system schools. As part of this effort, all courses will move from a four-digit number to a five-digit number. Some subject codes will also change.
"Discussions about a common course index began over 10 years ago and became more serious when the decision was made to implement Workday Student," said Dave Dawson, senior associate vice provost for Enrollment Services and director of Workday Student. "Aligning the UA System institutions under a common course numbering schema supports transfer students by making equivalent courses at each school easier to identify," said Dawson.
While course numbers will change for all UA System schools, each institution will primarily use UA course subjects and numbers, adding a digit in the fourth spot. In most cases, the fourth digit will be a "0," and honors courses will add an "H" in the fourth position. For example, MGMT 4103 will become MGMT 41003 and MGMT 4103H will become MGMT 410H3. The first digit will continue to indicate the course level (1=freshman, 2=sophomore, etc.), and the last digit will continue to represent the course credit hours.

Courses are currently being scheduled for the fall 2024 term using the new common course numbering system. Students will register using the new course numbers beginning with advance registration on April 1, 2024.
A course number lookup tool is available to aide in comparing old and new course identifiers. Users can search by course numbers or title to find a comparison of current and future course codes and numbers. Additional information guides will be provided to the campus as the advanced registration period approaches.
