The Department of Food Science invites you to attend a seminar featuring Dr. Senay Simsek at 3:05 p.m. on Monday, March 4, 2024. Dr. Simsek will present her research on "Carbs Uncovered: The Inside Scoop on Carbohydrate Function and Lab Applications at Purdue."

Simsek's research program integrates grain quality with with the structure-function relationships of carbohydrates, focusing on value-adding strategies for grains and by-products. Her group aims to increase cereal crop utilization by developing innovative applications for carbohydrates, fostering partnerships between producers, scientists and food processors.

Simsek is a professor and department head at Purdue University with a Ph.D. in food science from Purdue University. After 15 years working in the Plant Sciences Department at North Dakota State University, she has moved to her current position.

She has authored and co-authored numerous research papers and conference contributions in the area of grain quality and carbohydrate chemistry. The first North Dakota State University Bert L. D'Appolonia Endowed Professorship in Cereal Science and Technology was awarded to Dr. Simsek in Aug 2013. She has been awarded the International Young Scientist Research Award (2013) and the International Excellence in Teaching Award (2019) by the Cereals & Grains Association. In 2020, Dr. Simsek was awarded the Andersons Cereals and Oilseeds Award of Excellence by NC-213 U.S. Quality Grains Research Consortium. Recently, she received the 2022 Purdue University's Distinguished Alumni Award. Simsek is an inspirational teacher and adviser, and her deep understanding of industries and challenges around the world has created successful research partnerships at a global scale.
