Wear Purple on April 15 in celebration of the Month of the Military Child.

April is recognized nationwide as the "Month of the Military Child." This month is an opportunity to recognize and appreciate all the  experiences and contributions of children within military families. According to the Department of Defense, there are more than 1.6 million military children who face many challenges and unique experiences because of their parents' service. These children often grow up with their military parents missing important events in their life. Between missed holidays/birthdays/games, frequent moves to new places and the interruption of quality time together as a family, these children are resilient.

Join the Veteran and Military-Affiliated Student Center in celebration of "Purple Up Day" to support the military-affiliated students on our campus. We encourage students, faculty and staff to wear purple on April 15 in solidarity with military dependents worldwide. The VMSC staff welcomes military dependents to stop by the center to pick up their Purple Up sweet treat between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Why Purple?

Red + White + Blue = Purple and symbolizes the joining of the entire military community.

Did You Know?

The dandelion is the official flower of the military child. "A dandelion puts down roots almost anywhere, and it's almost impossible to destroy. Military children bloom everywhere the winds carry them. They are hardy and upright. Their roots are strong, cultivated deeply in the culture of the military, planted swiftly and surely. They're ready to fly in the breezes that take them to new adventures, new lands and new friends. Experts say that military children are well-rounded, culturally aware, tolerant and extremely resilient. Military children have learned from an early age that home is where their hearts are, that a good friend can be found in every corner of the world and that education doesn't only come from school. They live history. They learn that to survive means to adapt, that the door that closes one chapter of their life opens up to a new and exciting adventure full of new friends and new experiences." - A poem from an unknown author.

Purple Up Day is part of the Veteran and Military-Affiliated Student Center's ongoing commitment to supporting a military-friendly campus and fostering a welcoming and inclusive community. The VMSC recognizes the importance of honoring the contributions and sacrifices of military families and are proud to stand with them during the Month of the Military Child.

The Veteran and Military-Affiliated Student Center is located at 640 N. Garland Ave. in suites 115-116.
