Bolivia and Evo Morales

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Dr. Eduardo Gamarra, UA alumnus and director of the Latin American and Caribbean Center at Florida International University, will present a talk on “Politics in Latin America: Bolivia and Evo Morales,” at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct.30, in seminar room A of the Reynolds Center building. This event is free and open to the public, and a reception with refreshments will follow.

With the recent election of its new President, Evo Morales, Bolivia has moved to the forefront of increasing international attention to Latin American politics, as Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has attempted to extend his influence in the hemisphere and new left-leaning governments have emerged in several key Latin American nations.

Since receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh in 1987, Gamarra has spoken widely to national and international audiences as a highly regarded expert on Latin American political affairs, including testimony before the U.S. Congress. He has published more than 50 articles and has authored or edited a dozen books on Latin America and the Caribbean. He has also served as a consultant to multilateral agencies, non-governmental institutions and government agencies throughout the hemisphere, including the United Nations Development Program and the Organization of American States. His most recent publication is “Working with Evo Morales: Building Constructive U.S.-Bolivian Relations,” available from the Council on Foreign Relations.
