Brazzell Among the Best In State

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — A Little Rock magazine has named the University of Arkansas vice chancellor for student affairs, Johnetta Cross Brazzell, among the most influential African Americans in the state.

PowerPlay Magazine’s April issue will feature the article “25 Influential African Americans in Arkansas.” This group of honorees was selected based upon their individual contributions in areas including education, medicine, law, government, business, media and philanthropy.

“Our next issue's cover story will highlight 25 African Americans who have achieved influence in their respective areas,” said PowerPlay founder and publisher Darren Peters. “Our magazine is continually featuring African Americans with influence and authority.”

Brazzell joined the University of Arkansas in January 1999 as the vice chancellor for student affairs after working in student affairs at the University of Michigan and the University of Arizona. Brazzell earned her bachelor's degree in history and political science from Spelman College, her master's degree in American history with an emphasis on the African American experience from the University of Chicago and a doctoral degree in higher and adult continuing education in 1991 from the University of Michigan.

But she was quick to point out that her success is actually a reflection of all that her student affairs staff does on a daily basis. “It’s all about the students,” Brazzell said. “Everything that we do in student affairs, from the residence halls and dining facilities to the Arkansas Union, is centered on students. They are why we do what we do.”

PowerPlay Magazine, described as “the intelligent, provocative voice of today's new Black power generation", is a bimonthly publication that aims to highlight the depth and diversity of African Americans in Arkansas. The next issue of the magazine will be available by April 15.
