Celebrate International Education Week with the University of Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — November 12-16 marks the eighth annual International Education Week and the University of Arkansas is celebrating with a number of events highlighted by the release of Engaging Missouri: An Epic Drama of Love, Honor, and Redemption Across the Color Line, by Charles Frank Robinson II. The book release includes a reception and book signing at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, in the Multicultural Center on the fourth floor of the Arkansas Union.

“In a world that is becoming increasingly integrated and interdependent, it is critical that students have an understanding and appreciation of other cultures and countries,” said Sen. Blanche Lincoln. “The University of Arkansas is helping to broaden this global perspective through a commitment to international education and by facilitating partnerships and understanding in support of international education.”

Today there are 958 students from 101 countries attending the University of Arkansas, and the largest representation of students is, in order: India, China, Japan, Bolivia and Korea, according to the Office of International Students and Scholars.

“I think International Education Week is a time to celebrate,” said Veronikha Salazar, program coordinator, Office of International Students and Scholars. “This is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to recognize the global exchange environment between the United States and other countries. It's an effort to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn and exchange experiences in the United States.”

International Education Week is supported at the highest levels of the university administration and the city of Fayetteville.

“Through participation in programs such as study abroad, foreign language courses, student and faculty exchanges and the welcoming of international students to our campus, we give our students an opportunity to broaden their perspectives and to develop into truly global citizens,” said UA Chancellor John A. White.

Fayetteville Mayor Dan Coody issued a letter to the university community stating, “Because international education plays such an important role in the future of our students and because continued support and commitment to international education and the increased global understanding and cooperation that it creates is vital for our country and the rest of the world, I offer my full support to the efforts and goals of International Education Week a the University of Arkansas.”
