Department Of Chemistry And Biochemistry Announces Award Recipients

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The department of chemistry and biochemistry honored its award recipients during the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences Honors Ceremony, April 11, 2003.

"We are very proud of the academic achievements of our undergraduates," department Chairman Bill Durham said.

"This year we had many students qualify for awards and in fact the largest award, the Barbara Wertheim Campbell Award, was shared by three of our top-graduating seniors. A number of our students were also recognized for achievements outside the department and we gave one award to a non-chemistry major."

Durham presented the department awards with the exception of the Frederick A. Kekulé Award, which was presented by University Professor Emeritus Arthur Fry.

Grietje Elizabeth Everts received the Kekulé Award, established in honor of the founder of the structural theory of organic chemistry and awarded to the outstanding sophomore bachelor of science chemistry major.

Dr. Sacks and his wife Wilma were both medical doctors and established the first biochemistry research laboratory in our department.

Chemistry major Tara Quinn and education major Shelly Sullivan shared the Kathy Noland Award. The award was established in memory of Noland, a former member of the faculty and recognizes freshmen students who have demonstrated outstanding ability in laboratory work.
