Fall Classes - and Welcome Weeks - begin Monday, Aug. 25

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – University of Arkansas students will have plenty of activities to take part in as classes begin for the 2008 fall semester on Monday, Aug. 25. The majority of students living on campus are moving in this week. “Hog Wild” Friday Night Live will be held Friday, Aug. 22, to welcome student to their first late night event of the year in the Arkansas Union.

Students will be welcomed to the university with activities on campus, collectively known as “Welcome Weeks 2008, Hog W.I.L.D.” W.I.L.D. is an acronym for Welcome, Involvement, Leadership and Diversity.

“Welcome Weeks is an official group of activities to introduce new students to the campus community,” said Shelia Burkhalter, director of First Year Experience Programs.

Welcome Weeks is designed to give students information about involvement opportunities on campus; provide them with opportunities to interact with fellow students, faculty and staff; help create connections to the campus community; and generally start the school year off right.

Academic Convocation is the official University of Arkansas welcome in which students are greeted by the university chancellor, academic deans, administrators, staff and faculty. It will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, in Barnhill Arena. Following Academic Convocation, Burger Bash officially welcomes all new and returning students back to school with food and entertainment in the south end zone food court of Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium.

Razorbash is another major event that welcomes students to campus and will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27. Razorbash is held on the mall between the Arkansas Union and Mullins Library. Students will find more than 120 booths operated by local businesses, university departments and student organizations. This is an opportunity to see what campus organizations have to offer students, as well as connect with local merchants.

The Midnight Madness Shopping Spree, which will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight Sunday, Aug. 23, will introduce students to the Razorback Transit buses that will take them to the Northwest Arkansas Mall and to other area merchants where shop owners have created discounts for university students for this special event.
