Family And Engineering Company Establish Scholarship To Honor Engineering Legacy

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Civil engineering students at the University of Arkansas will have access to more scholarship opportunities, thanks to the McClelland family and McClelland Consulting Engineers and their $100,000 gift commitment to the University of Arkansas College of Engineering.

The scholarship is named in honor of J.E. and Maurice A. McClelland. J.E. McClelland was a 1940 bachelor’s of civil engineering alumnus and founder of McClelland Consulting Engineers, which opened its doors 40 years ago in Fayetteville. He died in 2000.

The company is still operated by members of the McClelland family. With offices in Fayetteville and Little Rock and is among the largest firms in the state. The family members who established the scholarship wanted to honor J.E. McClelland on the 40th anniversary of the firm’s founding. The family members are: Maurice McClelland, J.E. McClelland’s wife; James (Jim) E. McClelland Jr., (BSCE 1967) and Patricia Finley McClelland; Raymond and Deanna McClelland; and Linda McClelland Rogers (BM 1972, BSBA 1980); and Joseph S. Rogers (BARCH 1973).

The purpose of the scholarship will be to provide financial assistance for an upperclassman civil engineering student at the U of A.

UA Chancellor John A. White said, "We are grateful to the McClelland family for this gift to endow an engineering scholarship at the University of Arkansas. It’s such a fitting tribute to the McClelland legacy that a scholarship be established to help educate future engineers. This scholarship will be very attractive to upper division students who need financial assistance in meeting their educational goals."

Jim McClelland said, "There are many reasons why we chose to make this gift: Our whole family has all been educated at the University of Arkansas. Our firm has provided engineering services to the University and we felt it was our responsibility to give something back to the institution and support the Campaign for the Twenty-First Century. The timing was also great since we’re celebrating our 40th anniversary and wanted to honor our father, who was the founder of our company. Finally, we really hope to encourage others to contribute to their alma mater to show support and appreciation for their University of Arkansas engineering education."

The McClelland family has provided scholarship support for civilengineering students at the University of Arkansas over the years and believe that alumni have a responsibility to give back to the University of Arkansas.
