Family Establishes Endowed Award at Law School in Memory of Daughter

 

Fayetteville, Ark. - David and Nancy Bartlett of Hot Springs have established the Michelle Lee Bartlett Endowed Award at the University of Arkansas School of Law in memory of their daughter, Michelle Lee Bartlett.

The Bartletts, along with family and friends, have contributed $10,000 for the award, which will provide funds for an incoming second-year law student in the top 20 percent of his or her class with an interest in criminal law. The student must also submit a maximum three-page memorandum on a criminal law issue. The selection of the recipients of the Michelle Lee Bartlett Award shall be the responsibility of the scholarship committee of the University of Arkansas School of Law with advice from a committee comprising Mrs. Nancy Bartlett and Mr. and Mrs. Howard Marshall.

Michelle Lee Bartlett was a second-year law student at the University of Arkansas who died in September of 2003 at the age of 23. As a law student, she was a member of the Student Bar Association and Phi Delta Phi honor fraternity, and competed in the Client Counseling competition. As an undergraduate student at the university, she was a Chancellor's Scholar, a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma social sorority and a member of the University Judiciary Board. She graduated in 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts in political science.

A 1998 honors graduate of Lakeside High School in Hot Springs, Michelle Lee Bartlett served as Senior Class president and played on the school's tennis team. She was also a member of First United Methodist Church in Hot Springs.

Michelle Lee Bartlett was the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Bartlett of Russellville and the late Mr. and Mrs. O.J. Wilhite of Benton.
