Fulbright Professor Honored with Award for Service as Editor of Ornithology Journal

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Kimberly G. Smith, chair of the department of biological sciences, has received an award for service from the American Ornithologists’ Union for his outstanding work as editor of an ornithology journal.

The Marion Jenkinson American Ornithologists’ Union Service Award recognizes exceptional and outstanding service to the American Ornithologists’ Union.  Smith, a professor in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, served as editor of the American Ornithologists’ Union journal, The Auk, from 2000 to 2004.

The Auk, a quarterly, has published original reports on the biology of bids for more than 100 years.

Smith was recognized for his uncompromised commitment to the quality of the journal, as well as his efforts to reform the publication’s management.  Smith increased the efficiency and effectiveness of the publication office through his reorganization and implementation of new technology. 

Smith was acknowledged for bringing the American Ornithologists’ Union publication enterprise to the forefront of ornithological publishing, which was outstanding service not only for the American Ornithologists’ Union, but also for ornithology as a whole.

Smith received the award at an awards ceremony of the American Ornithologists’ Union at the University of California, Santa Barbara, Calif.

The American Ornithologists’ Union, which was founded in 1883, is the oldest and largest organization in the Western Hemisphere devoted to the scientific study of birds.
